ness, and have become too strongly attached to the world and the things of the world. Awaken us to a sense of our unworthiness; pardon the sins of our nation; forgive all those who humble themselves this day before thee, and spare thy people; animate us to unite with one heart in promoting the honor of thy name, the interests of religion, and the prosperity and happiness of our country. May we keep the fast which thou hast chosen; and loosing every band of wickedness, become a peculiar people zealous of good works, that thy displeasure may be turned away from us, and that thou mayest delight to build us up and not destroy us.

O thou, who art the Lord of lords, and the Fountain of all power, we commend to thy care and blessing the President of the United States, the Governor of this State, and all others in authority. May they have wisdom to discern, and firmness to

pursue the true interests of this people; may they employ all their influence to promote peace and virtue; and under their government may justice and judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. due with grace and clothe with godliness the ministers of religion. May they do honor to thy truth in their public services and their private conduct; and do thou so direct and bless them, both in their preaching and living, that they may save themselves, and those who hear them. We beseech thee to bless all seminaries of learning, all governors and instructers of youth, all patrons and promoters of sound literature and knowledge; and grant that all the means and opportunities of mental, moral, and religious advancement, which are enjoyed among us, may be thankfully acknowledged and diligently improved.

Universal Parent and Governor; be merciful to the whole race of man;

enlighten all who sit in darkness; send forth a spirit of peace and good will; restrain the violence of unreasonable men; may no weapon formed against the rights of mankind prosper; multiply the patterns of christian virtue and the instruments of beneficence; direct all flesh to the knowledge of thy Son; and may thy kingdom come and thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven; which we ask as disciples of Jesus Christ. Amen.

THE Lord bless us and keep us; the Lord make his face shine upon us, and be gracious unto us; the Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, now and evermore. Amen.

END OF SERVICE FOR FAST DAYS.

FORMS OF PRAYER

TO BE USED AT SEA.

This Service may commence with the following Psalm; after which the Person officiating may use such parts of the common Morning or Evening Prayer, as he shall judge proper.

PSALM 93. THE Lord is King, and hath put on glorious apparel, and girded himself with strength.

He hath made the world so sure that it cannot be moved.

Ever since the world began, hath thy throne been prepared; thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their

waves.

The waves of the sea are mighty, and rage horribly; but yet the Lord, who dwelleth on hi ̧h, is mightier.

Thy testimonies, O Lord, are very sure, hoilness becometh thine house for ever.

After the Collect for the Day may be used the following Prayer.

O ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; who hast compassed the waters with bounds, until day and night come to an end; be pleased to receive into thine almighty and most gracious protection, the persons of us thy servants, who now call upon thy name from the

bosom of the mighty deep. Borne on the surface of a changing element, and exposed to the vicissitudes of the inconstant skies, may we always we always feel ourselves in the presence and merciful care of that infinite and holy God, who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with a span. Preserve us, we pray thee, from the dangers of the sea; from shipwreck; from fire; from the wrath of the tempest; from the violence of enemies; and grant that we may arrive at our desired haven, in safety, health, and peace, and with a thankful remembrance of thy rich and manifold mercies. But we do more especially pray, O Lord our God, that if thou shouldst see fit to bring us into peril and misfortune, we may bear thy whole will with perfect submission, and surrender ourselves in every event to thine absolute and all wise disposal. Whether we are in danger or at rest, in sickness

or health, in life or death, let us be thine, O Lord, and wholly thine.

Hear us in behalf of our country, and grant that it may constantly prosper under thy care, and be defended with thy favorable kindness as with a shield. friends,

Bless our absent wherever they may be; preserve them from evil; and in thy great mercy permit us to see them again, and rejoice in their society and welfare.

We thank thee, that thou hast thus far preserved us; we thank thee for this opportunity of calling upon thy name; we commend ourselves and our interests to thy holy keeping; and ascribe unto thee all honor and glory, dominion and praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this.

O LORD, our God, who madest heaven, and earth, and sea, and all that therein is, and who keepest thy promise for ever; merci

fully hear the prayers of thy servants; deliver us from the dangers of the seas; protect and prosper us in the way we go, and bring us to our haven and to our friends in peace; but above all things grant that we may always submit to thy will and pleasure, and obey thy most holy law, and so pass the waves of this changing and troublesome world, that we may finally come to the land of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be read other Prayers of the Morning or Evening Service, or else the Benediction may immediately follow.

PRAYER IN STORMS AT SEA.

O MOST glorious and gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below; look down we beseech thee, and hear us, calling out of the depth

of misery; and out of the jaws of this death, which is now ready to swallow us up. Save, Lord, or else we perish. The living, the living shall praise thee. O send thy word of command to rebuke the raging winds, and the roaring sea; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy name all the days of our life. Hear, Lord, and save us, in the name of our blessed Saviour, thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

THOU, O Lord, who stillest the raging of the sea, hear, hear us, and save us that we perish not.

O God, whose Son Jesus Christ did save his disciples ready to perish in a storm; hear us, and save us, we beseech thee. Lord be merciful to us

sinners, and save us for thy mercies' sake.
