This book is fun and an easy read. It also contains a concise and accurate digest of information on a figure who was important in the mid-to-late 20th century, until his functioning was neutralized by a lifetime of wounds -- many self-inflicted. By the time the highly researched authorized biography of John C. Lilly, MD, came out in late 1989, Dr. Lilly himself was incapable of appearing on the Larry King Show, to which he and biographer Francis Jeffrey were both invited to talk about the book. More regrettably, the publisher's marketing aspirations undercut the scholarly value of the volume, firstly by cutting out half the story and the indices, tables and cross-references required for a really good biography. Secondly, by misrepresenting the book as a jointly written auto-biography, by printing a cover (and a title page) showing two authors: "by Francis Jeffrey & John C. Lilly." This ploy by J. P. Tarcher caused critics at the time to dismiss the objectivity of the account -- as reflected in full-page reviews in major newspapers. (The real situation is accurately shown on the copyright page, and in Library of Congress catalog data.) Since the biographer (Jeffrey) knew Dr. Lilly and so many of his significant contemporaries, settings and circumstances, this biography is a treasure trove of snap-shots and insights on a circle of people and ideas, in the second half of the 20th Century, whose emanations reverberate into the 21st Century culture of Cyberspace, Virtual Reality and saturation entertainment.
