Front Cover
3 Reviews
Cicerone Press Limited, Jun 1, 2007 - Sports & Recreation - 240 pages
Chamonix to Zermatt, Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn - in two weeks of mountain travel you will see the greatest collection of 4000 metre peaks in the Alps and visit some of the most spectacular valleys. The route is more than 180 kilometres long. It crosses 11 passes, gains more than 12,000 metres in height and is a strong contender for the title of Most Beautiful Walk in Europe. This new edition includes a few minor changes which have occured to the route, as well as the exciting two-day Europaweg - a true high-level path that carries the Haute Route way above the Mattertal and into Zermatt - a worthy conclusion to a great trek. There are updates to the accommodation lists and the telephone numbers. 'Kev Reynolds knows these areas well. He's walked them for years and yet always manages to bring a freshness and vitality to his writing, a rare thing amongst modern guidebook writers.' -TGO magazine

In general Cicerone guides are excellent and this guide is no exception. It includes everything you need to complete the hike. Doing the hike in summer 2010 I even saw people relaying completely on the book and omitting maps (not recommended), and the found the way. But remember the following:
1. The book will not walk for you; you should be sufficiently trained to complete 13-14 long days of walk in steep terrain.
2. Nothing can replace a map. Never walk without map and compass - there can be bad weather.
3. Be sure to get the latest edition. Currently (2010) the 2009 edition is the latest. Check on Cicerone web page before buying.
4. We found these changes on the route since the book was released:
a) Cabane the Moiry has expanded with a new part which has a fantastic view over the glacier. Well worth the effort to climb up
b) We decided to not do the Europaweg due to hight and risks. But there is a new bridge (230 m) over one of the rock fall sections that makes the trail a little less risky.
